May 22, 2007 NSF Biophotonics Program recognized Notable Accomplishment of Sergey B. Mirov for Development of Infrared 'Optical Nose'. The outcome of this development project will be offered as a "technology opportunity" for U.S. laser and photonics companies, in order to maximize the societal impact of the project. 2007-2008 Colloquium Series

The Department of Physics is located within the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. It offers courses in astronomy, physical science, and physics for non-majors; several undergraduate program options, including honors physics program, biophysics track, and a physics education track for physics majors planning an interdisciplinary career; and graduate programs. The Graduate Program in Physics offers training in the basic and applied skills necessary for interdisciplinary research in academia, national laboratories, and industry. The Department of Physics has 18 full-time and 8 adjunct/emeritus faculty, and research expenditures of $2.2 million in astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter, materials physics,  nanophysics, optics, lasers, spectroscopy, and physics education. Opportunities exist for interaction with major government laboratories including NASA AMES Research Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, and Marshall Space Flight Center; the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Lab; the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at Brookhaven National Lab; the Lawrence Livermore National Lab; the Naval Research Lab; Oak Ridge National Lab; and the Air Force Research Lab.
