Interest and Future Goals.

Before my entry into the United States Marine Corps, I have always had an interest in engineering and electronics; however, I was oblivious about the education and preparation required for such a demanding career as a result I did not build a solid foundation in the sciences. Before, my decision to attend Tougaloo College and enroll in the physics program I had absolutely no exposure to the field, coupled with lackluster mathematical skills. With the support from my department and classmates I have had the opportunity to build a good foundation in this electrifying field. Majoring in Physics has been both a challenging and rewarding experience.

In the summer of 2003, Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi granted me the pleasure of assisting him with research of charged-coupled devices with an application in astrophysics at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Initially I felt the subject matter was information overload, but with my work ethic I managed. Recently I was informed my mentor published some of my work. The research experience at Berkeley helped myself and others appraise my abilities and identify my inadequacies. I hope to duplicate this at UAB this summer in the REU program.

After graduation from Tougaloo College, I want to pursue a graduate education in physics at an institution with an excellent support system for its students. Afterwards, I intend to have a career with a national research laboratory near a metropolitan area so I can help mentor and tutor inner city youth in mathematics and physics. I want to show them the importance of a good science education so they don’t have to experience some of the hardships I have had to. Since my exposure to Physics, it has become lucid to me that it is truly the mother of all sciences and I would like to share this knowledge with others who like myself, were unaware of the endless opportunities someone with a science background has.
If selected for a summer research opportunity at UAB, I will continue to build upon the skills beneficial to a student aspiring to become a research physicist. I feel, with the right supervision, guidance and mentorship it will further foster my goals. By working closely with research personnel I would be able to showcase my work ethic and give the faculty the chance to offer their guidance on educational matters; as well as, why UAB would be a the ideal institution to pursue my graduate education.
